Teaching As A Vehicle For Social Justice

BAX Youth Education’s Racial Equity Professional Development Cohort will investigate the ways we as teaching artists and/or generative artists, can use our creative practices intentionally as a vehicle for social justice and activism, specifically in addressing racism, sexism, and cissexism. We will be using the unconference model of facilitation and your voice will help define the conversation. This workshop will be participant-driven and grow from the questions and experiences of those who join us.
This workshop will be facilitated by members of BAX Youth Education’s Racial Equity Professional Development Cohort, which includes Angie Pittman, Ashley Thaxton-Stevenson, Billy Schultz, Dani Criss, Donna Costello, Kelindah Schuster, Lucia Scheckner, and Maira Duarte.
Intergenerational Conversation
2:30-4:00 pm
This conversation, with artists and their children and/or parents, cultivates an understanding of intergenerationality amongst artists coming from immigrant families, the challenges it brings in generations of people communicating across languages and cultures and explores this communication as a possible step towards addressing intergenerational trauma.
Featuring Kristine Haruna Lee (former BAX AIR), her mother Aoi Lee (a butoh dancer), and guests, the conversation will be facilitated by Denise Shu Mei. This event is presented in conjunction with Kristine Haruna Lee’s world premiere production of Suicide Forest at The Bushwick Starr directed by current BAX AIR Aya Ogawa.
This event is also a potluck! Please bring a small dish to share with up to 2-3 people. You will receive communication from us regarding your potluck contribution.
