Thousands of performing artists come through BAX’s doors each year to rehearse, perform, teach, curate, take part in residencies, and act as artist advisors. Our distinct focus on developmental process and an individualized approach to working with each artist has made BAX a nurturing incubator, supporting some of NYC’s most exciting performing artists. In our nearly 30 year history, BAX has premiered the work of rising dance and theater artists, many of whom have become key figures in the field, including George Emilio Sanchez, Reggie Wilson, Dean Moss, Nia Love & Marjani Forte, luciana achugar, Aurin Squire, Young Jean Lee, Faye Driscoll, Abigail Browde, Erin Markey, Yasuko Yokoshi, Aya Ogawa, Dan Fishback, Jillian Peña, Katy Pyle, Paloma McGregor, Mariana Valencia and many more.
RESIDENCIES
BAX’s Artist in Residence Program (AIR) provides up to 6 emerging NYC dance, theater and performance artists with up to two years of artistic, technical, and administrative support for the development of new work.
Annually, BAX offers Summer and Fall Space Grants to 6-7 performing artists which include ample free rehearsal space, performance opportunities and studio shares. BAX provides a unique Parent/Artist Space Grant to several dance and theater artists each year as well as periodic Alumni Space Grants acknowledging artists who began their training as young students at BAX. In 2018/19 BAX began the Disabled Artist Space Grant Program in partnership with Cora Dance and thanks to the NYC DCA’s CreateNYC Disability Forward Fund. BAX has continued the Disabled Artist Space Grant into 2020 and will continue to critically engage a commitment to access and equity. Other Space Grant arrangements are curated and developed in collaboration with community members, resident artists, and staff in order to continually exercise commitments to responsive artistic community action and engagement.

SPACE RENTAL
BAX offers NYC performance artists more than 10,000 hours of low-cost rehearsal space in four studios, available seven days per week. The Theater at BAX is also available for subsidized rental as part of our Visitors Program to independent artists and companies who wish to self-produce.
IN OUR THEATER
BAX’s presenting season has always been an integral part of our core work developing emerging artists. Many of our performance series include artists’ commentary about their work, creating an opportunity for artists and audiences of vastly different backgrounds and experiences to converse. BAX’s dedication to presenting new work, work in process, and work in a critical phase of development and experimentation reflects our vision of supporting artists rather than outcomes. BAX’s annual performance season consists of over 50 evenings of provocative and socio-politically relevant performance including in-progress and finished productions of current resident artists; the Upstart Program of new, emerging performance; and curated evenings by current and former Artists In Residence grounded in their own artistic inquiries. BAX also offers the Visitors Program, a subsidized performance package rental program.
CREATING SPACE
BAX provides opportunities to support and develop artists of all races, backgrounds, cultures, sexual orientations, gender identities, and aesthetic traditions. In 2019-20, BAX will host workshops/events including Needing It: Solo Performance in Queer Community; Dance to the People; Katy Pyle’s The Ballez; Artists Co-Creating Real Equity, and more.
ARTIST SERVICES WEEKEND
For the past several years BAX’s has hosted this free weekend dedicated to artists and their supporters with a series of workshops, panels and conversations centered around artistic support and practice for working artists in New York City. Everything from roundtables on making art while black, to panels on grant writing and fundraising, to workshops on teaching practices, populate this very well-attended weekend, which served over 250 artists each year.
